This is rolling out worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>The breadcrumbs-like information can show the site name in place of the domain name. This is rolling out in the U.S. only for now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These before and after examples from Google\u2019s announcement on the Google Webmaster Central blog show what\u2019s changing:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36543\" style=\"width: 402px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2015\/04\/better-presentation-of-urls-in-search.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/breadcrumb-url-example.png\" alt=\"breadcrumb-url-example\" width=\"402\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">URL structure replaced by breadcrumb format in Google mobile search results<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The change replaces a SERP result\u2019s URL with a description of the page\u2019s location in a \u201cbreadcrumbs-like format.\u201d Here&#8217;s the exciting part of this announcement for online marketers: <strong>You can control your displayed breadcrumb URLs and site name using Schema.org structured data<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2>Change #1: Breadcrumbs Format instead of URL Structure<\/h2>\n<p>Google now displays the breadcrumbs-like format instead of URLs in mobile search results, period. The search engine has been testing this formatting for years in web and mobile search, and they\u2019ve decided to implement it worldwide for mobile searches. Therefore, <strong>whether your site has marked up its pages with structured data or not, Google shows a breadcrumb format in place of your URL structure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can <em>specifically control how the breadcrumb URL appears<\/em> if you add Schema.org markup to the HTML on your pages. Refer to Schema.org\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BreadcrumbList\">breadcrumbs structured data<\/a> for details; you can also find instructions in Google Developers Help, although at the time of this writing, the page was not up-to-date:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36545\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36545\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/enhance-site\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/google-breadcrumb-documentation.png\" alt=\"google-breadcrumb-documentation\" width=\"600\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Google Developers reference for Breadcrumb structured data markup can be found here: https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/enhance-site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>UPDATE: Google posted\u00a0the Help page as of June 15, so you can check out Structured Data: <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/enhance-site\" target=\"_blank\">Breadcrumbs<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what if you don\u2019t (yet) have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/schema-markup-guide\/\">schema markup<\/a> on your site? <strong>Without structured URL data to refer to, Google will display whatever structure it feels best represents the way that page fits in your site.<\/strong> Google primarily bases this on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actual page URL, and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Breadcrumb navigation on the page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Well-Structured URLs for the Win<\/h3>\n<p>Google looks for clues starting with the page URL itself. If you have organized your website content in a physical silo structure, with folders arranged in a logical way, then you have a big advantage. Even your naked URLs reveal a lot of information. As a best practice, the directories leading to your page should\u00a0communicate a clear idea of what your page is about, both to the search engines that\u00a0crawl your URL path and to visitors who see the URL in their browser address bar.<\/p>\n<p>For example, compare the well-structured URL (top) to the flat directory structure below it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230;com\/engine-parts\/cooling\/audi-a6-quattro-engine-timing-belt-kit.html<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;com\/cooling-audi-a6-quattro-engine-timing-belt-kit.html<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice how, in the first URL, the folders \u201cengine-parts\u201d and \u201ccooling\u201d provide context for the name of this product page. We know that this product <em>falls within <\/em>the category of engine parts used for cooling.<\/p>\n<p>A well-structured URL doesn\u2019t have to be many levels deep to communicate what a page is all about. In fact, keeping pages within a few clicks of the home page is a recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/seo\/search-engine-optimization\/\">SEO<\/a> best practice (three to five clicks deep is a good maximum guideline, though very large sites may need more). Flattening your URLs so that everything is on one level, as in the second URL above, creates chaos. There are many reasons to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/structured-urls\/\">structured URLs versus a flat directory structure<\/a>, and Google\u2019s latest announcement adds another reason to the list.<\/p>\n<h3>Breadcrumb Navigation Leads to SEO Success<\/h3>\n<p>Does your site have breadcrumb navigation links at the top of each page? Those little links help search engines understand your site structure in a powerful way. Breadcrumb links pass link equity within your site to reinforce your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/seo\/siloing\/\">silo strategy<\/a>. Showing a logical breadcrumb path on every page of your site naturally passes link juice up to your main landing pages. It also has a user-friendly benefit, since people can click there to find their way up to broader levels of content.<\/p>\n<p>Now there\u2019s another benefit to implementing breadcrumb navigation, and that\u2019s to give Google a suggested format for a breadcrumb-structured URL.<\/p>\n<p>Note: In cases where a page&#8217;s\u00a0breadcrumbs do not match its\u00a0structured URL, and\u00a0there&#8217;s no schema markup to follow, we aren&#8217;t sure whether the breadcrumbs or URL would take precedence. Knowing Google, we believe the\u00a0URL algorithm would make a judgment call influenced by\u00a0the page content and possibly the user&#8217;s query. <em>If anyone has real-life examples that shed light on this, please comment below.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Change #2: Site Name instead of Domain<\/h2>\n<p>The second part of Google\u2019s announcement was that the new structured URLs could show \u201cthe real-world name of the site instead of the domain name.\u201d This change only applies to mobile searches in the U.S. for now, but is likely to be distributed more widely.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s own help topic for <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/structured-data\/site-name\">including your site name in search results<\/a> says <strong>you can provide one or more names for your website using\u00a0Schema.org markup on your official home page<\/strong>. If you provide more than one possible name, Google\u2019s algorithm will choose between them for each result. However, specifying just one site name lets you control what is displayed at the beginning of your structured URL breadcrumbs in Google mobile search results. In the examples Google gave, \u201cwww.wikipedia.com\u201d and \u201cwww.google.com\u201d were simplified:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36546\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36546\" style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/site-name-breadcrumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/site-name-breadcrumb.jpg\" alt=\"site-name-breadcrumb\" width=\"322\" height=\"578\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A site name can be specified with structured markup.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Why Specify Your Site Name in New Breadcrumb\u00a0URLs<\/h3>\n<p>The best reason to mark up your site name is for branding. You want people to recognize your business by name, and Google\u2019s giving you another opportunity to be seen. It\u2019s also a cleaner look\u00a0\u2014 if you start your breadcrumbs-style URL with the business name, it\u00a0allows more space for users to read the words that come next.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to see that this shortened breadcrumb\u00a0URL\u00a0format will give major brands an advantage. Searchers can see a familiar and trustworthy name more clearly now that it\u2019s not hidden between other characters, and as a result, recognizable brands may see their click-through rates on mobile improve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be sure to specify a true and natural name of your business, not anything deceptive. <\/strong>Interestingly, the comments on Google\u2019s announcement post contained many predictions that spammers would take this and run with it. In other words, a small shoe manufacturer might specify the site name \u201cNike\u201d and try\u00a0to appear bigger than they are.<\/p>\n<p>According to Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/structured-data\/site-name\">guidelines<\/a> for specifying your site name, the website name (or names) you supply in your markup should meet certain\u00a0criteria. Your site name must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Be reasonably similar to your domain name<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Be a natural name used to refer to the site, such as \u201cGoogle,\u201d rather than \u201cGoogle, Inc.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Be unique to your site \u2014 not used by some other site<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Not be a misleading description of your site<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google can smell spam a mile away. Don\u2019t be foolish enough to even try deceiving the search engines, or your site rankings will suffer.
