Even though it\u2019s not a \u201cseparate\u201d product, that webpage can be indexed like the main product page, if it is discovered by Google via a link<\/p>\n<p>When this happens, and you have a lot of size and color combinations, you may end up with many different webpages for one product. Now, if Google discovers those webpages URLs, then you may end up having multiple webpages in the Google index for one product.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"how-do-I-get-rid-extra-webpages-googles-index\"><\/a>How Do I Get Rid of \u201cExtra\u201d Webpages in Google\u2019s Index?<\/h2>\n<p>Using the canonical tag, you can get all of those product variation URLs to point to the same original product page. That is the right way to handle near-duplicate content, such as color changes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/advanced\/crawling\/consolidate-duplicate-urls\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Here\u2019s<\/a> what Google has to say about using the canonical tag to resolve this issue:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>A canonical URL is the URL of the page that Google thinks is most representative from a set of duplicate pages on your site. For example, if you have URLs for the same page (example.com?dress=1234 and example.com\/dresses\/1234), Google chooses one as canonical. The pages don&#8217;t need to be absolutely identical; minor changes in sorting or filtering of list pages don&#8217;t make the page unique (for example, sorting by price or filtering by item color)<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Google goes on to say that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>If you have a single page that&#8217;s accessible by multiple URLs, or different pages with similar content \u2026 Google sees these as duplicate versions of the same page. Google will choose one URL as the canonical version and crawl that, and all other URLs will be considered duplicate URLs and crawled less often.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t explicitly tell Google which URL is canonical, Google will make the choice for you or might consider them both of equal weight, which might lead to unwanted behavior \u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But what if you don\u2019t want those \u201cextra\u201d pages indexed at all? In my opinion, the canonical solution is the way to go in this situation.<\/p>\n<p>But there are two other solutions that people have used in the past to get the pages out of the index:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Block pages with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/robots-txt-guide\/\">robots.txt<\/a> (not recommended, and I\u2019ll explain why in a moment)<\/li>\n<li>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/advanced\/robots\/robots_meta_tag\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">robots meta tag<\/a> to block individual pages<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Robots.txt Option<\/h3>\n<p>The problem with using robots.txt to block webpages is that using it does not mean Google will drop webpages from the index.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/robots\/intro#:~:text=A%20robots.txt%20file%20tells,or%20password%2Dprotect%20the%20page\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to Google Search Central<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which URLs the crawler can access on your site. This is used mainly to avoid overloading your site with requests; it is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Also, a disallow directive in robots.txt does not guarantee the bot will not crawl the page. That is because robots.txt is a voluntary system. However it would be rare for the major search engine bots not to adhere to your directives.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Either way, this is not an optimal first choice. And Google recommends against it.<\/p>\n<h3>Robots Meta Tag Option<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/robots-meta-tag\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google says<\/a> about the robots meta tag:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>The robots meta tag lets you utilize a granular, page-specific approach to controlling how an individual page should be indexed and served to users in Google Search results.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Place the robots meta tag in the &lt;head&gt; section of any given webpage. Then, either encourage the bots to crawl that page via an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruceclay.com\/blog\/what-is-xml-sitemap\/\">XML sitemap<\/a> submission or naturally (which could take up to 90 days).<\/p>\n<p>When the bots come back to crawl the page, they will encounter the robots meta tag and understand the directive to not show the page in the search results.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"summary\"><\/a>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>So, to recap:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using the canonical tag is the best and most common solution to the problem of \u201cextra\u201d pages being indexed in Google &#8212; a common issue for\u00a0 ecommerce websites.<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t want pages to be indexed at all, consider using the robots meta tag to direct the search engine bots how you want those pages to be handled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Still confused or want someone to take care of this problem for you?
